Is my printer worth fixing?

My printer is no longer printing. Is it worth fixing or should I just throw it away?

Jim, Kotara

Hi Jim,

It will depend on what the issue is. If problem is caused by a software issue on your computer then generally fixing it is a fairly painless process. However if it is a hardware issue where something is physically wrong with the printer they are generally cheaper to replace.

A software issue will normally present itself as the printer appear to turn on correctly however when you print nothing happens. This is caused by an issue with the printer and computer talking and can be resolved.

If however the printer has a hardware issue then generally it isn’t worth fixing. A hardware issue will often present itself as the printer not turning on, making funny noises or jamming constantly. Unfortunately most consumer grade printers are designed and built as throw away items. Once they are out of their warranty period they are not worth fixing.

The only time a printer with a hardware issue is worth fixing is if it is a business grade printer. Generally business grade printers have parts more readily available and are also more expensive meaning the difference between fixing and replacing is a lot more.
